Product Filters Design Best Practices

Product filters are an important feature of any e-commerce website, helping consumers refine their search and quickly find the items they’re looking for. They are a crucial element of the product listing page, enabling users to filter based on specific criteria. Poorly designed product filters can make it difficult for users to find what they need, leading to frustration and website abandonment. Therefore, effective product filtering is essential for reducing bounce rates and improving the overall user experience. Want to boost your website’s user experience? Learn how to design winning product filters with Neeraj Aneja.

Tips to design Product Filters

– Place them on the left side of your product listing pages.
– Aim for 20-30% of the viewport area for consistent accessibility.
– Show only filters directly related to the products on the page.
– Conduct thorough research to identify the most effective options for your categories.

Advance Tips to design filters

– Group filter options with less than 5 products.
– Offer a collapse/expand option for filters to save space on the page.

What are active filters?

Always display active filters within your filtering results, ensuring they’re clearly visible and manageable. This allows users to easily see what criteria they’ve currently applied. Place selected filters in a dedicated section, either above all filters or on the right side above the product section. This way, users can quickly identify what filters are influencing their search results. Additionally, offer an easy way to deselect multiple filters at once.

Reset all filters

Include a prominent “Clear All Filters” call to action (CTA) button near the active filters, allowing users to reset all selections with a single click.

Grouping of filters

Create intuitive filter groups aligned with your product taxonomy. This helps users easily narrow down their search by price, product category, brand, color, and other relevant attributes.
